Campus Bird Walk at Shyampur Siddheshwari Mahavidyalaya, West Bengal

Highlights from the Event

A campus bird walk at Shyampur Siddheswari Mahavidyalaya, led by Sk Saikat Ali, brought together 14 enthusiastic participants for a lively morning of birding. The walk revealed a rich mix of common and charismatic species, with flocks of Rock Pigeons dominating the built areas while Jungle Babblers and Black Drongos animated the open grounds. Calls of Asian Koels echoed through the trees, and a lone Shikra added a raptor highlight, briefly commanding attention as it scanned the campus. Smaller species like Common Tailorbirds and the striking Oriental Magpie-Robin kept participants engaged along the shrubbery and garden edges.

Water-associated birds added diversity to the checklist, including Little Cormorants, Eastern Cattle Egrets, and a solitary Black-crowned Night Heron tucked away in quieter corners. Kingfisher sightings stood out, with both White-throated and the impressive Stork-billed Kingfisher recorded. The group also noted colorful and active species such as Rufous Treepies, Red-whiskered and Red-vented Bulbuls, and a single Alexandrine Parakeet flying overhead. A pair of flowerpeckers—Thick-billed and Pale-billed—along with an Asian Palm Swift, rounded off a well-balanced and rewarding campus bird walk experience.
