Campus Bird Walk at New Govt. Girls College, Khairagarh, Chhattisgarh

Highlights from the Event

A campus bird walk at New Govt. Girls College Khairagarh, led by Pratik Thakur, brought together 14 participants for a rewarding exploration of the college grounds. The open habitats and scattered trees supported a rich mix of grassland and urban birds, with sightings of Paddyfield Pipit, Ashy-crowned Sparrow-Lark, and Indian Bushlark highlighting the ground-dwelling species. Grey Francolin and Greater Coucal added to the diversity, while Indian Rollers and Asian Green Bee-eaters provided vibrant flashes of color. Flocks of Scaly-breasted Munias and Indian Pied Starlings were particularly active, creating lively movement across the campus.

Tree cover and built areas hosted a variety of familiar yet engaging species, including Common Myna, Brahminy Starling, and multiple dove species such as Spotted, Laughing, Eurasian Collared, and Red Collared Doves. Smaller birds like Purple Sunbird, Yellow-throated Sparrow, and Oriental Magpie-Robin kept participants attentive, while Indian Robin and Black Redstart added further interest. Notable highlights included a Eurasian Hoopoe probing the ground and Yellow-wattled Lapwings in open patches, along with a lone Barn Swallow passing overhead. The walk offered a well-rounded introduction to the region’s everyday birdlife, making it an enjoyable and educational experience for all participants.
