Campus Bird Walk at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal

Highlights from the Event

A campus bird walk at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal, led by Ankit Malviya, brought together 12 participants for an engaging morning of birding. The walk showcased a vibrant mix of urban and woodland species, beginning with ground-dwellers like Grey Francolin and Indian Peafowl, while the calls of Asian Koel and the presence of Greater Coucal added to the early morning atmosphere. Raptors such as Shikra and Black Kite circled above, while flocks of Rosy Starlings and Brahminy Starlings animated the treetops alongside ever-present Rock Pigeons and doves.

The campus greenery supported a lively array of smaller birds, including Common Iora, Ashy and Grey-breasted Prinias, and the active Common Tailorbird moving through shrubs. Bright flashes of Purple Sunbird and the rhythmic tapping of Coppersmith Barbet added charm, while Spotted Owlet offered a memorable highlight. Other notable sightings included Black Drongo, Wood Shrike, Oriental Magpie-Robin, and Indian Robin, along with species like Baya Weaver, Dusky Crag Martin, and Black-shouldered Petronia. The diversity of habitats within the campus made for a rewarding checklist, giving participants a well-rounded introduction to central India’s common birdlife.
