Highlights from the Event

A two-day campus bird walk at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kollam, led by Syam Sukumaran, brought together 36 participants for an engaging exploration of local birdlife. The walks revealed an impressive diversity across habitats, from open grounds to wooded patches and water edges. Familiar urban species like Common Myna, House Crow, and Feral Pigeon were abundant, while more striking sightings included Brahminy Kite soaring overhead, Black-hooded Oriole in the canopy, and Blue-tailed Bee-eaters hawking insects in flight. Water-associated birds such as Little Cormorant, Great Egret, Pond Heron, and Wood Sandpiper added variety, alongside vocal Red-wattled Lapwings along open stretches.

The campus greenery supported a lively mix of passerines, including Yellow-billed Babbler, Jungle Babbler, Red-vented Bulbul, and White-breasted Munia, while Purple and Loten’s Sunbirds brought flashes of color. Participants were particularly delighted by sightings of White-throated Kingfisher, Oriental Magpie-Robin, and the subtle Pale-billed Flowerpecker, along with species like Gray-bellied Cuckoo, Rufous Treepie, and Blyth’s Warbler. Complementing the walks, a seminar on common birds of the region by the guide enriched the learning experience, helping participants better understand identification and behavior. The event concluded on a warm note, with the college presenting a memento to the guide in appreciation of his efforts and expertise.

Bird Guide: Syam Sukumaran

He is an experienced bird guide with over 10 years of birdwatching and photography, specialising in wetland birds and with strong expertise in raptors. A regular traveller across the green landscapes of South India, he brings solid regional knowledge and an engaging, field-based approach to birding.
